The SAG part stands for Screen Actors Guild, and AFTRA stands for American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. They started a strike a month ago, protesting against the equitable division of profits, royalty, work conditions and industry’s use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Yesterday they commenced the strike with more power as actors joined them in the cause. This would mark the first time in 63 years that actors and writers have gone on strike in Hollywood and nationwide. The dispute is between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), a trade association representing the larger and more known corporations like Disney, Netflix, Universal, and Warner Bros. Discovery.

An end date for the strike action is yet to be set and is set to have an impact on movies and TV shows all over the world.

According to news strikes have already had a big impact on productions for shows like:

  • Stranger Things (season 5)
  • The Last Of Us (season 2)
  • The Handmaid’s Tale (season 6)
  • Game Of Thrones spinoff – A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight
  • House of the dragons (season 2)

The studios’ representative, the AMPTP, expressed regret over the failure of the negotiations. They stated in a statement that “a strike is certainly not the outcome we hoped for as studios cannot operate without the performers who bring our TV shows and films to life.”
“The Union has regrettably chosen a path that will lead to financial hardships for countless thousands of people who depend on the industry,” read the statement.
