Netflix is dropping ‘Depp v. Heard,’ docu-series on August 16

In 2022, the defamation trial involving Johnny Depp and Amber Heard captured widespread attention on the internet. Now, Netflix is offering a closer look into the infamous case via their docuseries, “Depp v. Heard.” And, it’s trailer looks just as riveting as you’d expect.

More than a year after the courtroom proceedings were televised live and scrutinized online. A docu-series on formerly married Hollywood actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s defamation trial is coming on Netflix. The streaming platform released the first official trailer on Thursday, confirming that ‘Depp v. Heard’ will be available for viewers from August 16, 2023.

It’s a three-part series that will look at the events of the trial and the consequences it had on all of those involved. As well as how the decision was made to make it a public legal battle rather than a private one. The second and third episodes of the series will specifically examine how the online coverage of the trial affected it. And how the world of social media offered their reactions throughout the case.

Behind the Camera

Depp V Heard was originally shown on Channel 4 in May earlier this year. The three episodes being aired over three days. The running time of each episode clocks in at 47 minutes. The director and executive producer behind the documentary series is Emma Cooper. Who previously worked on The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes, which aired on Netflix last year.

A person in the trailer narrates, “Depp was the one who wanted the cameras in the courtroom, she didn’t.” While another suggests, “I would argue it’s a PR campaign disguised as a defamation case.” The voice-over explains the process of turning from a legal battle into a cultural one. Stating, “This has moved away from a news story or a lawsuit and has transformed into a cultural moment.”

The Netflix synopsis for the trailer read:Depp v Heard examines the infamous defamation case that captured the world’s attention as the first Trial by TikTok, and questions the nature of truth and the role it plays in our modern society.”
