Two weeks after Hawaii wildfire killed at least 114 people and left hundreds more missing. The US president traveled to Hawaii to survey the damage caused. Biden has been criticized over a lackluster response to the crisis.
The most recent wildfire in Hawaii happened in early August 2023, mostly on the island of Maui. These fires were pushed by strong winds and caused many people to leave their homes. They did a lot of damage and sadly, at least 114 people died, and around 850 people were missing in a town called Lāhainā.
These fires were caused by dry and windy weather. A strong area of high pressure in the north and a hurricane named Dora in the south created the right conditions for the fires to start and spread. The fires burned a big piece of land, around 2,170 acres (880 hectares). A lot of buildings were destroyed too. Experts estimated that about 2,207 buildings were completely destroyed, and around 2,719 buildings were exposed to the fires. Moreover, The cost of the damage was really high, estimated to be around $5.52 billion by August 11, and the next day the governor said it was close to $6 billion.
President Joe Biden visits Hawaii and called the whole situation ‘overwhelming’.
“For as long as it takes, we’re going to be with you,” said Mr Biden, who spoke for about 10 minutes amid the rubble. “The whole country will be with you.” He added: “The country grieves with you, stands with you and will do everything possible to help you recover.”
Destruction of Wildfire
These fires show us that even though we don’t usually think of Hawaii having wildfires, it’s becoming more possible because of changes in the climate. However, the weather is getting hotter and drier, which makes it easier for fires to start and spread.
Hawaii is trying to prevent more wildfires by doing things like making spaces without trees and plants to stop fires from spreading. They’re also teaching people about how to stay safe from wildfires. Moreover, but there’s still a lot more that needs to be done to keep Hawaii safe.
In addition, Here are some things you can do to help stop wildfires in Hawaii:
- Be careful and avoid things that could start fires, like smoking or grilling in dry areas.
- Clean up plants and leaves around your home to make a space that fires can’t cross.
- Have a plan for what to do if a fire starts close to your home.
- Tell the police right away if you see something that doesn’t look right.
- If we all work together, we can help protect Hawaii from more wildfires.
