More than 11000 migrants are waiting in northern Mexico to cross the border into the United States. The number of migrants trying to cross the border has been increasing in recent months, and this is a humanitarian crisis that needs to be addressed.
More than 11000 migrants are currently waiting in shelters and camps on the Mexican side of the US-Mexico border, according to community leaders. These migrants come from various countries, including Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela, and they are hoping to enter the United States through legal pathways established by the Biden administration.
In Tijuana, Mexico, approximately 3,800 migrants are staying in shelters near the border with San Diego, California. In Reynosa, Mexico, across from McAllen, Texas, around 3,273 migrants are waiting in Senda De Vida shelters. However, nearby Matamoros, Mexico, about 4,000 migrants are living in camps, shelters, and abandoned homes.
The surge of people crossing into the US from Mexico has put significant strain on US border cities in recent weeks. Federal authorities reported a seven-day average of over 9,600 migrant encounters along the US southern border in December, compared to around 6,800 encounters at the end of November.
Despite the challenges, the chances of successfully entering the US for these migrants are slim. The US Department of Homeland Security has deported or returned over 445,000 migrants since May, with the majority having crossed the southern border. The federal government has also closed ports of entry in multiple states and temporarily suspended rail operations in some areas.
US officials have had a “very productive meeting” with Mexican counterparts to tackle the migrant crisis at the US-Mexico border today. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas expressed gratitude for Mexico’s commitment to address the issue. The talks, attended by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House Homeland Security adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall, were reported to have gone well.
We can hope with the consideration and care, world leaders can find a solution for this human crises soon!
