Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has conducted missile strikes targeting what it claims were Israeli “spy headquarters” in Iraq’s Kurdish region and alleged ISIL (ISIS) sites in northern Syria. The IRGC stated that it aimed to defend its security and counter-terrorism. This attack on Iraq and Syria comes at a wrong time when the world is already facing a biggest humanitarian crises in the region.
The attack in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region. It resulted in at least four deaths and six injuries, according to the regional security council. The IRGC claims it targeted Mossad, Israel’s spy agency, in Erbil. In Syria, the IRGC said it aimed at “terrorist bases” linked to the Islamic State group (ISIS) in the border regions.
The Iraqi government condemned Iran’s actions, calling it an “aggression” and a violation of sovereignty. Emergency teams are conducting search and rescue operations in the affected areas. The government is considering various actions, including filing a complaint with the United Nations Security Council.

Iran, however, asserts that it is exercising its “legitimate and legal right to deter national security threats.” The conflict has prompted Iraq to recall its ambassador from Tehran for discussions.
The United States condemned the missile attacks, with the Department of State spokesperson describing them as “reckless” and undermining Iraq’s stability. Two US officials reported that there were no casualties among US personnel, and the missiles were deemed “imprecise.” Other Western nations, including the UK and France, echoed these concerns, urging immediate de-escalation.
The attacks come amid concerns about regional escalation, particularly due to ongoing tensions in the Gaza Strip. Analysts suggest that while significant, these strikes may not necessarily indicate a broader escalation.
