The landslide prompted a swift response, with 200 rescue workers, numerous fire engines, and additional equipment dispatched to the scene. Witnesses described the terrifying incident, with one resident mentioning that she initially thought it was an earthquake, while another shared the impact on their home.
Videos shared on social media depicted emergency workers in orange jumpsuits and helmets braving the elements, as snowflakes swirled around them. Images showed rescuers diligently searching through collapsed structures, uncovering a few personal belongings.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “all-out” rescue efforts, emphasizing the need to minimize casualties. He stressed the importance of comforting the families of the deceased and ensuring the well-being of those affected. China allocates 50 million yuan to support rescue efforts
While landslides are common in the mountainous Yunnan region, the cause of this particular disaster remains unknown. Efforts are underway to investigate the incident. The local village head, too busy to comment, declined to discuss the details.
