The pigeon was released on January 30th after spending eight months in Indian custody. The pigeon was found near a port in Mumbai with rings on its legs and markings that appeared to be Chinese writing. However, after an investigation, it was determined that the pigeon was an open-water racing bird from Taiwan.
In series of unique events, a pigeon that spent eight months in Indian custody on suspicion of being a Chinese spy has been set free after authorities cleared it of the alleged espionage charges.
The bird was apprehended at a Mumbai port with what seemed to be “messages written in a Chinese-like script” on its wings. Initially accused of spying, the police dropped the charges after completing their inquiry. Moreover, the report reveals that the pigeon was not involved in any espionage activities. After an investigation, it was determined that the pigeon was an open-water racing bird from Taiwan that had strayed off course.

However, during the investigation, the unnamed pigeon was kept under lock and key at a city hospital. A process that animal right association PETA India found to be “astonishingly” lengthy, as reported in a statement on Thursday.
Formal permission for the pigeon’s release was granted by the police to the hospital on Wednesday, as confirmed by PETA India. However, local media reports indicate that the bird flew away in good health after being set free.
This incident is not the first of its kind, as Indian authorities have detained several pigeons on suspicion of espionage in the past. In 2016, a pigeon carrying a threatening message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi was taken into custody near the border with Pakistan. Moreover, another pigeon in 2010 was held under armed guard with a ring around its foot, a Pakistani phone number, and an address stamped on its body in red ink. Authorities speculated that it may have been on a “special mission of spying.”
