After the recent Pakistan election, concerns have been raised by the United States, Britain, and the European Union. They want a thorough investigation into reported irregularities during the voting process.
The election was mainly a contest between parties led by former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan. Despite both claiming victory, questions have emerged about the fairness of the election.
In the election, 265 seats in the national assembly were up for grabs, with a party needing 133 seats for a simple majority. However, allegations of interference and arrests of activists have cast doubt on the legitimacy of the results.
Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was barred from participating, and Khan himself is currently in jail. Many independent candidates, mostly supported by Khan, won seats. Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif’s party secured a significant number of seats as well.
Khan and his supporters believe that the military is behind efforts to sideline his party. On the other hand, analysts suggest that Sharif is being supported by the military.

International Concerns
The EU and the US have highlighted issues such as restrictions on freedom of assembly, expression, and internet access, as well as violence and attacks on media workers during the election.
Various US lawmakers have also expressed concerns, urging the State Department not to recognize a winner until allegations of misconduct are thoroughly investigated.
Although the UN has denounced violence against political parties and candidates, the EU, US, and UK have not congratulated any candidate or party yet, indicating their reservations about the fairness of the election.
Multiple legal cases have been brought against Khan, disqualifying him as a candidate. However, he denies any wrongdoing.
Khan was ousted in 2022 after falling out with the country’s powerful military, which denies meddling in politics. His party won the last national election in 2018.
The situation remains tense, with calls for transparency and fairness echoing from international observers.
