Ramzi Yousef is a convicted terrorist who was responsible for the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. He was also involved in other terrorist plots, including a plan to blow up 11 airliners over the Pacific Ocean. Yousef was captured in Pakistan in 1995 and is currently serving a life sentence in the United States.
Ramzi Ahmed Yousef was born on April 27, 1968, in Kuwait. He is known for being the main person behind the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993. Yousef was born to Pakistani and Palestinian parents. He went to the United Kingdom to study electrical engineering and improve his English. After finishing his studies, he went back to Kuwait but had to leave when Iraq invaded in 1990. He then went to Afghanistan, where he learned how to make bombs and started working to recruit people for al-Qaeda, a terrorist organization.
In September 1992, Yousef traveled to New York City. There, he planned the attack on the World Trade Center by gathering people and materials needed for the bomb. On February 26, 1993, a bomb he and others made, weighing about 1,500 pounds, was set off in the World Trade Center’s underground garage, killing six people and injuring over 1,000. Yousef left for Pakistan that same night. His partners in the attack were caught and found guilty.
Tale Of Terrorism
Yousef also tried to kill Benazir Bhutto, a political leader in Pakistan. He also planned other attacks, including bombing the Israeli embassy in Thailand and a shrine in Iran. He also wanted to kill U.S. President Bill Clinton during a visit to the Philippines, but that plan was too hard to carry out.
His most ambitious plan was called Project Bojinka, aiming to blow up 11 U.S. airliners over the Pacific Ocean with bombs that could be made on the planes and wouldn’t be found by airport detectors. He also planned to kill Pope John Paul II. However, a fire caused by mixing bomb chemicals led to the police finding his plans on his laptop.
