Sweden is poised to become NATO’s 32nd member after Hungary’s parliament finally approved its accession. This follows a period of delays, with Hungary being the last holdout among NATO members. This move marks a significant shift for Sweden, which has maintained a policy of neutrality for over 200 years.
In a historic move, Hungary’s parliament voted on Monday to approve Sweden’s accession to NATO membership. It marked the final step for the Scandinavian nation to officially join the military alliance. This decision ends Sweden’s 200-year policy of neutrality and bolsters NATO’s presence in the wake of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Sweden, along with neighboring Finland, submitted their applications to join NATO in May 2022. Three months after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. While Finland’s accession was ratified in April 2023, Sweden’s bid faced delays due to concerns raised by Turkey and Hungary.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is known for his close ties with Russia. He met with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson last week. Orbán supported Sweden’s membership after securing agreements, including Sweden’s commitment to provide fighter jets to Hungary.
Hungary’s approval on Monday removes the last hurdle, paving the way for Sweden to formally become NATO’s 32nd member. The decision was met with widespread celebration in Sweden, with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson calling it a “historic day.”
“Sweden is now leaving 200 years of neutrality and nonalignment behind us,” Kristersson said. “It is a big step. We must take that seriously.”
Analysts believe that Sweden’s membership will significantly strengthen NATO’s military capabilities. Sweden boasts a modern and well-equipped military, particularly in its air force and navy, which will contribute to the alliance’s collective defense.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg also welcomed the news, stating, “Now that all Allies have approved, Sweden will become the 32nd #NATO Ally. Sweden’s membership will make us all stronger and safer.”

With Hungary’s approval secured, the final steps for Sweden’s accession involve formal approvals from NATO and the U.S. State Department. Once completed, Sweden will officially become a NATO member.
Sweden’s accession to NATO membership signifies a major shift in European security dynamics, particularly in the Baltic Sea region. It underscores the concerns shared by Sweden and other European nations regarding Russia’s actions in Ukraine and their commitment to collective defense through NATO.
