The incident highlights the ongoing issue of sexual violence in India. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau, an average of nearly 90 rapes are reported each day in the country. However, many cases go unreported due to societal stigma and distrust in the justice system. Despite efforts to improve the situation, convictions for such crimes remain rare.
The incident brings back memories of the 2012 gang rape and murder of a physiotherapy student in New Delhi. It sparked widespread protests and led to changes in the law, including the introduction of the death penalty for rape cases.
