The roots of International Women’s Day trace back to the early 20th century. It began as National Women’s Day in the United States in February 1909, before evolving into an international movement. At the second International Conference of Working Women in 1910, women’s rights activist Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an International Women’s Day to advocate for equal rights for women across borders. The proposal was unanimously supported by female attendees from 17 countries. Then the convention led to the first International Women’s Day on March 8, 1911.
International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for women’s rights and gender equality. It is celebrated as a national holiday in many countries. Various events and activities are held to honor women’s achievements and contributions to society.
Theme For 2024 Event
This year, the campaign theme for 2024 day is #InspireInclusion, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in promoting gender equality. Additionally, the United Nations’ official theme for the day is “Invest in women: Accelerate progress“. The theme highlights the need for continued investment in initiatives that empower women and advance gender equality.
Despite progress in recent years, achieving gender parity remains a significant challenge. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2023, it will take another 131 years to reach gender parity at the current rate of progress. Issues such as the gender pay gap and limited political empowerment for women persist, underscoring the importance of ongoing efforts to address gender inequality.
