The new Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season might see its second half played outside the country, according to reports. This comes amidst speculation of a scheduling conflict with the upcoming Indian general elections. This wouldn’t be the first time the IPL has been held outside India. In 2014, the first half of the season was staged in the UAE due to similar scheduling constraints.
In a recent report, it’s suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might consider moving the second half of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) to another country. This move is being considered due to the possibility of the Lok Sabha elections coinciding with the IPL schedule.
Although the exact dates for the IPL haven’t been officially announced yet. Although, it’s anticipated that the tournament will take place in April and May. The Election Commission is expected to reveal the election dates on Saturday, March 16.
According to a report by the Times of India, BCCI officials are currently in Dubai to explore the feasibility of hosting the second half of the IPL in the UAE. A BCCI official mentioned, “The Election Commission of India will announce the election schedule on Saturday at 3 pm. After that, the BCCI will decide whether should be moved to Dubai.”
Despite these considerations, it’s important to note that BCCI has previously stated its intention to keep the IPL in India. However, reports suggest that some IPL teams have taken precautions by collecting players’ passports in case of a need for relocation during the general elections.
It’s worth remembering that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the IPL was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Matches were conducted across three venues: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.
