Due to the severe heat wave, the Punjab School Education Department has decided to start summer holidays earlier than initially planned. All schools will now be closed from May 25.
In response to a severe heat wave, the Punjab School Education Department has changed the schedule for summer holidays in public and private schools across the province.
According to a new notification, all government and private schools in Punjab, including Lahore, will now be closed from May 25. Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat said many private schools contacted the government to request early summer holidays. Private schools holding exams this week are allowed to remain open, but the heat is expected to intensify next week. The Punjab School Education Department decided to start summer holidays from May 25 after consulting with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
Previously, the minister announced that summer holidays would start on May 22. In a video message, Rana Sikandar Hayat emphasized the importance of student health and safety during the current heat wave. He said that 96% of parents who gave feedback supported starting the holidays earlier.
“The wellbeing of our students is our top priority. Given the extreme temperatures, it is crucial to take preventive measures to ensure their safety,” he stated.

Initially, all schools had scheduled the summer holidays to begin on June 1 and end on August 14. The decision to reopen schools on August 15 applied to both government and private schools across Punjab.
Change School Operational Hours in Punjab
Another notification announced a change in school operational hours to protect students and staff from the extreme temperatures. The notification stated that schools would remain open from 7 am to 11:30 am, Monday to Thursday. This schedule aimed to minimize exposure to the harsh midday sun.
