Pakistani-origin cricketer Antum Naqvi has joined Zimbabwean cricket team for their upcoming T20I series against India in Harare. Naqvi, a top-order batter, received his maiden call-up for five-match series, although his participation is still subject to confirmation of his citizenship status, according to Espncricinfo.
Naqvi’s journey in cricket is unique and impressive. Born in Brussels, Belgium, to Pakistani parents, he moved to Australia at age of four. In Australia, he pursued a commercial airline pilot’s license but put his aviation career on hold to focus on cricket. This decision has paid off, as he quickly made a name for himself in Zimbabwean domestic cricket.
Earlier this year, Naqvi became the first player to score a triple century for any Zimbabwean team in representative cricket. He achieved this milestone with an unbeaten 300 for Mid West Rhinos in Logan Cup, leading the team as captain in just his second year playing in Zimbabwe. His performance in T20 matches has also been noteworthy, boasting a strike rate of 146.80 in seven games.

Sikandar Raza: Zimbabwe’s First Pakistani-Origin Player
Naqvi is second player of Pakistani origin to join Zimbabwean squad, following in footsteps of Sikandar Raza, who is captaining the team in series against India. In addition to his domestic achievements, Naqvi has been part of player development program of Lahore Qalandars, which has further honed his skills for international play.
Upcoming T20I series between Zimbabwe and India is set to take place from July 6 to 14. This series is particularly important for Zimbabwe as they look to make a mark after failing to qualify for recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024.
Fans are eagerly awaiting Naqvi’s debut, hopeful that his inclusion will bring fresh energy and success to Zimbabwean team.
