Pakistan Govt. Restricts Social Media Access

Many internet service providers (ISPs) in Pakistan have been restricting social media access from Facebook and Instagram. There hasn’t been an official statement from the Pakistani government regarding the restrictions. Some reports speculate this might be a step towards a more complete social media shutdown.

The Pakistan government, led by Shehbaz Sharif, has further tightened its control over social media. After blocking X (formerly Twitter) for over six months, they have now restricted other social media access to Facebook and Instagram.

Since Wednesday, people in Pakistan have had trouble using Facebook and Instagram, with issues reported across various internet service providers. Some users are also facing problems with other Meta-owned apps like WhatsApp.

The government has not officially explained why they are restricting these platforms. However, this move comes amid political tensions between the judiciary, former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party (PTI), and the powerful military establishment.

Earlier, the Punjab government asked for a temporary ban on all social media platforms during the holy month of Muharram to prevent the spread of hate and misinformation.

Nayatel, a telecommunications company, confirmed the disruption of Facebook and Instagram services and said they are waiting for more information from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.

X has been banned in Pakistan since February 2024 after controversies surrounding the general election. The military and the government have both expressed concerns about social media, labeling it as “digital terrorism.”

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has also supported the idea of a complete ban on social media. Since the ousting of Imran Khan in April 2022, the government has arrested many of his party’s social media activists.

Imran Khan’s PTI criticized the new restrictions, saying that freedom of speech and access to information are basic human rights. They argued that the government was trying to suppress their party and freedom of expression.

As the situation develops, users in Pakistan are left wondering when they will regain access to Facebook and what the future holds for social media in the country.
