Some Apple employees and shareholders have accused the tech company of sending employee donations to organizations that have ties to the Israeli army and illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank. Moreover, claims suggest that Apple has sent $34.5 Million to Israeli military groups.
Apple, the tech giant, faces accusations from some of its employees and shareholders who claim the company has been directing employee donations to organizations linked to the Israeli army and illegal settlements in the West Bank.
A report by The Intercept highlighted an open letter from 133 individuals, including current and former Apple employees and shareholders, urging Apple to investigate and stop these donations. Moreover, they allege that Apple’s employee donation platform, Benevity, includes organizations that support the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and illegal settlements.
Key Concerns Raised
- Organizations Involved: The letter mentions groups like “Friends of the IDF,” “HaYovel,” “One Israel Fund,” and the “Jewish National Fund,” which allegedly support military and settlement activities.
- Legal and Ethical Issues: Critics argue that donating to these organizations may indirectly support illegal activities and human rights violations in the West Bank.
Employee Reactions
In April, a group called “Apples4Ceasefire” protested against Apple’s actions, particularly the disciplining of employees who showed support for Palestinians.
Diala Shamas, a senior attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights, emphasized that even if an organization has nonprofit status, aiding activities that violate international human rights law is illegal. In addition, she called for Apple to ensure its donations do not support such activities.
The open letter claimed that $34.5 million was sent to the Israeli army via Friends of the IDF, and another $5.3 million was raised for military and settlement activities through IsraelGives.
Apple Commitment
Apple’s management has not yet responded to these allegations. However, the company’s website states a commitment to international human rights frameworks.
The ongoing situation in Gaza, where over 37,200 Palestinians have been killed, has intensified scrutiny on organizations supporting military actions. People are now asking to boycott Apple after this open letter gets hype. Is it the start of the downfall of the tech giant or just a lame flare? let’s see together!
