Suryakumar Yadav Becomes India’s New T20 Captain

Suryakumar Yadav is selected as the new captain of India’s T20 team. He was appointed in July 2024 after Rohit Sharma stepped down from the role following India’s T20 World Cup win. It will be interesting to see how Yadav leads the team in the upcoming series against Sri Lanka and beyond.

Suryakumar Yadav has been announced as India’s new T20 captain after Rohit Sharma stepped down following India’s World Cup win last month. The 33-year-old will lead a 15-member team for a T20 series in Sri Lanka, starting on July 27.

Shubman Gill recently captained a second-string Indian team to a 4-1 series win in Zimbabwe. He will be the vice-captain for both T20 and ODI matches. Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the ODI team, with matches against Sri Lanka scheduled for August 2, 4, and 7 in Colombo.

Virat Kohli will return for the ODI matches, but fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will not be part of the tour due to a busy season. Rohit and Kohli had taken a break but are back to prepare for next year’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Suryakumar was not named in the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka tour, while Hardik, too, is taking a break from 50-over internationals.

Hardik Pandya—Tough Luck Champ

All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who was Rohit’s deputy during the T20 World Cup. He was initially a top candidate for the captaincy but lost out due to frequent injuries. Moreover, Pandya, who injured his ankle last year, made a comeback in this season’s Indian Premier League and remains part of the T20 squad.

Yadav, currently ranked No. 2 in the ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings, known for his aggressive batting style, was coach Gautam Gambhir’s top choice for captain. Yadav has previous leadership experience, having captained Mumbai in domestic cricket and led India to a series win against Australia last year.
