Iran Seals Border with Afghanistan Over Terrorism Concerns

Iran has decided to seal its border with Afghanistan due to growing concerns about terrorism. The border between the two countries stretches for about 920 kilometers.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, there has been a noticeable rise in terrorist activities, affecting neighboring countries, including Iran. Various terrorist groups, like the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Islamic State of Khorasan, have found safe havens in Afghanistan. These groups have been involved in numerous attacks across the region.

In response to these threats, Iran has begun constructing a new security barrier along its border with Afghanistan. This wall will be 300 kilometers long and 4 meters high. The move comes after a rise in terrorist incidents in both Iran and Pakistan, linked to the Taliban and its affiliated groups.

Iranian Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiani has highlighted the serious threat posed by these terrorist groups. He pointed out that the Kerman bombing, where terrorists entered Iran from Afghanistan, severely impacted the country’s national security.

Reports indicate that since the Taliban’s rise, there has been a significant increase in both terrorism and drug trafficking through the Afghan border. Illegal immigrants, many of whom are Afghans, have contributed to these issues. Over 8 million Afghan citizens are currently in Iran illegally, and Iranian authorities have deported about 5 million of them. Additionally, Iran’s eastern and southeastern regions have become major routes for drug trafficking into Europe.

The situation remains tense as the new border wall is constructed. Iran’s government hopes this measure will enhance security and reduce the flow of illegal activities. Meanwhile, the international community watches closely, concerned about the potential humanitarian impact and regional stability as Iran takes this significant step to safeguard its borders.
