The government of Pakistan has announced a significant financial assistance package for the families of missing persons. Each affected family will receive Rs5 million as part of this initiative. This decision, made by the cabinet, aims to support families who have been suffering for more than five years due to the disappearance of their loved ones.
Government sources clarified that this financial assistance is not compensation but a rehabilitation grant to help families cope with their losses. They stressed that they are taking every possible step to address the issue of missing persons, resolving 78% of cases in recent years. They are continuing efforts to solve the remaining 22% of cases, and all state institutions are implementing strict measures.
Pakistan Efforts to Resolve Missing Persons Cases
In a recent cabinet meeting, the members extensively discussed the issue of missing persons. The Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (CIED) resolved many cases, highlighting the state’s commitment to using all available resources to resolve this problem. Additionally, to reinforce this commitment, the government has launched the ‘National Consensus & Legal Resolution (NCLR) of Missing Persons’.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar stated that the Rs5 million package aims to support affected families rather than serve as compensation. If a missing person returns, the families cannot claim the amount. Tarar also noted that the cabinet approved crucial recommendations from various committees and received reports from two committees on missing persons. The government has been actively engaging with the families of missing persons to hear their concerns and suggestions.
The minister highlighted the efforts of a special committee set up by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government, which has been working tirelessly to address this issue. The Missing Persons Commission, operational for 13 years, has successfully resolved 78% of cases in recent years, with ongoing efforts to resolve the remaining 22%.
