Jamaat-e-Islami leader Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has warned the government sternly and suggested that people will boycott electricity bills nationwide if the government does not meet their demands. This announcement came during a sit-in protest at Liaquat Bagh, which has now entered its tenth day.
In his address to the protesters, Hafiz Naeem emphasized Jamaat-e-Islami’s commitment to its seven-point agenda and their determination not to back down. He called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take immediate action to lower electricity bills, stating that this step is crucial for the government’s political survival.
Hafiz Naeem criticized the government for not being honest. He pointed out that the government’s actions often contradict the promises made during talks. He highlighted the issue of high electricity bills and blamed it on mismanagement and corruption involving Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
Additionally, Hafiz Naeem took a swipe at the MQM, accusing them of joining different governments only to secure power and resources. He expressed frustration over the government’s inability to address key issues raised by the sit-in, including the high cost of living and expensive utility bills.
The sit-in at Liaquat Bagh is a central part of Jamaat-e-Islami’s campaign against rising inflation and high electricity costs. Despite long negotiations, the party has not yet reached an agreement with the government.
Possible Sit-In and Nationwide Boycott
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman hinted at the possibility of announcing a new sit-in in Lahore in the coming days, indicating an escalation in their protest strategy. He warned that if the government does not meet their demands, the protest could spread across the country and lead to a widespread boycott of electricity bills.
