India Imposes Curfew in Border Areas Amid Political Unrest in Bangladesh

In response to the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh, India has implemented a curfew in border areas to maintain order and security. The political turmoil began when Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the capital, Dhaka, and sought asylum in New Delhi.

The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has enforced a curfew from 6 pm to 6 am in all areas of Meghalaya within 200 meters of the Bangladeshi border. This decision comes as a precautionary measure due to the unstable situation in Bangladesh and its potential impact on India.

India shares a 4,096-kilometer border with Bangladesh, with 915.35 kilometers of it being unfenced. Five Indian states, including West Bengal and Meghalaya, are adjacent to Bangladesh, making border security a critical issue. The BSF is currently on high alert, and the situation near the borders is highly tense.

The curfew and heightened security come amid diplomatic challenges for India. Protests in Bangladesh have led to the collapse of Sheikh Hasina’s government, a key ally of New Delhi. This political upheaval has resulted in a significant diplomatic setback for India.

In addition to the curfew, the Indian government has taken further measures to control the situation. The Petrapole Land Port, a major crossing point for goods between the two countries, has been closed, leading to a backlog of Indian trucks stranded in Bangladesh. Furthermore, railway services between Bangladesh and India have been suspended indefinitely since mid-July.

The Indian government has also mandated that no one can enter the country without proper documentation and permission. These actions are aimed at preventing any potential spillover of the political unrest and ensuring the safety and security of the border areas.
