The Paris 2024 Olympics came to a spectacular close with a star-studded closing ceremony featuring Hollywood icon Tom Cruise. Cruise made a dramatic entrance by rappelling from the roof of France’s Stade de France, grabbing the Olympic flag and officially passing it to the next host city, Los Angeles. The stunt, accompanied by a teaser from Grammy-winner H.E.R, added a touch of Hollywood glamour to the event.
Over the past two weeks, the Games showcased thrilling sports action as China and the US fiercely competed for the top spot in the medal tally. The excitement continued until the very last event, with the American women’s basketball team narrowly defeating France by just one point to secure their 40th gold medal and finish at the top of the medal table.
Paris Games Spark New Enthusiasm
The Paris Games, marked by the iconic Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles, succeeded in rekindling Olympic enthusiasm. The city transformed into a vibrant celebration, and French swimmer Leon Marchand emerged as a standout star with four gold medals. Moreover, Paris 2024 chief Tony Estanguet praised the city’s newfound spirit, stating, “From a country of grumblers, we became a country of frenzied fans.”
Despite challenges like Russia’s war in Ukraine and heightened security concerns, the Games promised a “light at the end of the tunnel” and a showcase of global unity. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach highlighted this spirit of peace, noting, “You created a culture of peace.”
As the closing ceremony transitioned from Cruise’s motorbike exit to a prerecorded video of him skydiving to the Hollywood sign, Los Angeles prepared for its role as the next host. The flag’s journey ended at a beach party featuring performances by LA music legends such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish, and Snoop Dogg.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass acknowledged the high standard set by Paris but expressed optimism for her city’s diverse and star-studded approach. “They’ve got a high bar to reach. A lot of work to do,” said James Rutledge, a former banker, outside the Stade de France.
