The cricketing world is mourning the untimely death of Graham Thorpe at the age of 55. A revered batsman and accomplished coach, Thorpe was a cornerstone of English cricket for many years. Moreover, his contributions to the game as a player and aentor have left an enduring legacy.
Former England cricketer Graham Thorpe, one of the finest batters of his generation, tragically passed away after being struck by a train in Surrey. The 55-year-old’s death is believed to be a suicide, as revealed by his wife, Amanda Thorpe, and daughter, Kitty.
Thorpe’s daughter Kitty said the family “are not ashamed” of talking about his death. She added, “There is nothing to hide and it is not a stigma.”
The inquest into his death was held at Surrey Coroner’s Court in Woking. It is confirmed that Thorpe died from multiple injuries after the incident at Esher railway station. The coroner, Simon Wickens, expressed his condolences to Thorpe’s family and everyone touched by his life and career.
Thorpe had a distinguished career, representing England 182 times across all formats and scoring 16 Test centuries. He was well-regarded for his mental strength on the field. However, Amanda Thorpe shared that he struggled with severe depression and anxiety in recent years. Despite the love and support of his family, his mental health deteriorated, leading him to take his own life.
Graham Thorpe had a remarkable cricketing career, playing for England between 1993 and 2005, and later contributing to the sport as a coach. He was admitted to the hospital in May 2022 and was described as “seriously ill” at the time. Moreover, current Test players Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Ben Duckett hailed Thorpe after the news of his death emerged. While the retired England bowler Stuart Broad described him as a “wonderful person”.
The coroner confirmed that Thorpe died from multiple injuries and expressed condolences to his family and all those who were touched by his life and career. The full inquest into his death will take place at a later date.
