India is facing widespread protests and strikes after the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The incident has triggered a national outcry. Doctors across the country demanding justice and better safety for healthcare workers, particularly women.

On August 9, the body of the young doctor was found in a seminar hall at the hospital where she worked. Moreover, an autopsy confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted. The main suspect, Sanjay Roy, a civil volunteer associated with the Kolkata police, has been arrested. However, the victim’s family and the public demanded a more transparent investigation, leading to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) taking over the case.

Protests and Strikes

The brutal murder has led to widespread protests, with doctors and medical staff taking to the streets to demand justice. The Indian Medical Association (IMA), the country’s largest organization of doctors, has called for a nationwide strike. Starting Saturday, all non-emergency medical services in government and private hospitals will be suspended for 24 hours. In addition, this strike is expected to cause significant disruption in medical services across the country.

The incident has sparked anger not only among medical professionals but also across the general public, particularly women. Thousands have participated in “Reclaim the Night” marches, demanding safety and justice for women. The protests have also highlighted the broader issue of violence against women in India, a country where nearly 90 rapes are reported daily.

Government Response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the crime, calling for swift and severe punishment for those responsible. The protests have also led to demands for better security measures in hospitals. With suggestions that they should be declared protection zones, similar to airports and courts.

The tragic death of the junior doctor has reignited conversations about women’s safety in India. Many are comparing this case to the infamous 2012 Delhi gang rape, which led to significant legal reforms. However, the public’s reaction indicates that there is still much work to be done to ensure the safety of women and healthcare workers in the country.
