The Film Federation of India selected Laapataa Ladies as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards (Oscars) because it strongly represents Indian culture. The film, directed by Kiran Rao, tells the story of two newlywed women who accidentally swap places during a train ride.
The Film Federation of India has announced that Kiran Rao’s critically acclaimed film Laapataa Ladies will represent India at the 2025 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. It is Chosen from a competitive pool of 29 films, including Animal and Kalki 2898 AD. This film stood out due to its “Indianness” and its representation of India’s cultural and social systems.
According to the jury, chaired by Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua, Laapataa Ladies was selected because it powerfully embodies India’s ethos. “A film that represents India on all fronts is vital for the Oscars,” Barua explained. He noted that the film’s focus on gender equality and women’s empowerment, especially in rural India, added to its appeal. The film’s narrative follows two brides, who accidentally swap places during a train journey. The story also leads to a heartwarming and empowering story about identity and womanhood. Additionally, the film’s unique blend of humor, drama, and social commentary made it a compelling choice to represent India on the global stage.
Although Laapataa Ladies received mixed reactions online. Particularly due to the omission of Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light, it has garnered praise for its storyline and direction. For those unfamiliar, Laapataa Ladies screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 8, 2023. The film hit theaters in India on March 1, 2024, and premiered on Netflix on April 26, 2024. The comedy-drama is Kiran Rao’s second directorial venture in Bollywood. Rao made her directorial debut with the film, Dhobi Ghat in 2010, co-produced by Aamir Khan.
