Pakistani-American singer Arooj Aftab has again secured Grammy nominations for 2025. These nominations mark the fourth consecutive year she has been recognized by the prestigious music awards. Her song “Raat Ki Rani,” from the album Night Reign, earned a spot in the Best Global Music Performance category. Meanwhile, the album itself received a nomination for Best Alternative Jazz Album. This continued recognition has thrilled Aftab, who expressed her gratitude and excitement on social media, calling it an “amazing honor.”
Aftab first made Grammy history in 2022 as the first Pakistani woman to win an award, with her song “Mohabbat” in the Best Global Music Performance category. Since then, her reputation has steadily grown, with her unique style blending Sufi traditions, jazz, and folk music resonating worldwide. Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Aftab has spent nearly 15 years in the United States. She had moved there to study at the Berklee College of Music. Her musical journey reflects her rich cultural background, having grown up in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan before settling in the U.S.
Grammy’s Female Lead Nominations
This year’s Grammy nominations also spotlight many renowned global artists. Beyoncé leads with 11 nominations, bringing her total career nominations to a record-breaking 99. She stands out for her album Cowboy Carter, her first entry in the country music category, which has received nods for both Album of the Year and Country Album of the Year. Other top contenders include Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, Post Malone, and Taylor Swift, who have each earned multiple nominations across different categories.
In her competitive categories, Aftab faces some notable artists. For Best Alternative Jazz Album, she’s up against names like André 3000 and Meshell Ndegeocello. Her nomination in the Best Global Music Performance category brings her into competition with other celebrated global musicians, making this recognition even more prestigious.
With the Grammy Awards approaching, Aftab’s fans worldwide are celebrating her continued success and the growing representation of Pakistani and South Asian music on the global stage. The 2025 Grammys are set to be an exciting night for music, diversity, and artistic talent across genres and borders.
