The artwork is a heartfelt tribute to Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity. Using waterproof markers, David-Tolaram created a detailed map of Nigeria, showcasing its various cultures, traditions, and lifestyles. From vibrant clothing and music to festivals and cuisine, the piece celebrates the beauty and unity within Nigeria’s many ethnic groups.
“I wanted to create something that speaks to our multicultural identity and gives people a way to celebrate their heritage,” the 31-year-old artist shared. Before starting the project, he embarked on a journey across Nigeria, immersing himself in the country’s traditions. This personal exploration inspired the intricate details that define his artwork.
The ambitious project wasn’t without challenges. David-Tolaram spent two days assembling the massive canvas and six days creating the artwork itself. He initially planned to work in a circular motion from the center but adapted his approach as he progressed.
“I remember standing in the center of the canvas, feeling apprehensive. But the moment I began, all the fear disappeared,” he said. The energy at the 5,000-seat stadium was electric, with crowds cheering him on as he worked.
Reflecting on his achievement, David-Tolaram expressed his disbelief and joy. “Growing up, I never thought I’d hold a Guinness World Record. It feels surreal but deeply fulfilling.”
With this monumental artwork, David-Tolaram not only set a new global record but also delivered a powerful message of unity through diversity, making Nigeria proud on the world stage.
