Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has been honored with the US Navy’s highest civilian award, the Distinguished Public Service Award, for his significant contributions to the military through his films. The award was presented during a ceremony in London by US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro.
Cruise, 62, gained international fame with his role as a naval fighter pilot in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun. The movie’s immense popularity led to a rise in military enlistments and inspired many to join the Navy. He reprised the role in the 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, which became a global hit, earning over $1 billion at the box office.
In his acceptance speech, Cruise expressed gratitude for the recognition, He said, “I’m happy I have been able to be a source of inspiration to many of the sailors who serve today or have served in the past,” Cruise added. “The effort was not just on my end, but the cast and crew I get to work with on all our sets. They are what really bring the work to life.”
