Mamta Kulkarni Becomes Hindu Monk

Mamta Kulkarni, the Bollywood actress known for her roles in movies like “Karan Arjun,” has embraced a spiritual life and become a Hindu monk. This happened at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj in 2025. She has taken the name ‘Shree Yamai Mamta Nand Giri’.

Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni is known for her roles in numerous Bollywood movies. She has just embraced a spiritual path, leaving her glamorous career behind. During the ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, she was ordained as a Hindu monk and renamed Mai Mamta Nand Giri, according to Indian media reports.

Mamta underwent the sacred sanyas ritual in the Kinnar Akhara, a religious order founded by the transgender community in 2015. As part of the ceremony, she performed the pind daan, a ritual to honor deceased ancestors, before being consecrated as a mahamandaleshwar — a revered title in the Dashanami order of Hindu monks.

Speaking about her transformation, Mamta shared that she was tested on her spiritual dedication before receiving the title. “I had to prove my 23 years of meditation and penance through examinations. After passing, I was honored with the mahamandaleshwar title,” she said.

Mamta reflected on her spiritual journey, revealing that her inclination towards spirituality began in 1996 when she met Guru Gagan Giri Maharaj. She left Bollywood in 2002 to fully dedicate herself to spiritual practices. “Bollywood gave me fame, but spirituality gave me peace. I lived celibate for 12 years in Dubai, continuing my penance,” she said in an earlier interview.

Mamta Kulkarni made her Bollywood debut in 1992 with Tiranga. however, it was her performances in films like Ashaant, Aashiq Awara, China Gate, and Waqt Hamara Hai that cemented her status as a 90s icon. In less than ten years, she featured in over 50 films. With key roles in Ram Lakhan, Krantiveer, Karan Arjun, Sabse Bada Khiladi, and Baazi, among others.

The actress shared the screen with some of Bollywood’s biggest stars. The list includes Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Sanjay Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt, and Govinda.

    Despite her spiritual transformation, Mamta remains a controversial figure. In 2016, she was implicated in a high-profile drug case alongside her partner, Vicky Goswami. However, in 2024, the Bombay High Court dismissed the charges, calling the accusations “frivolous.”

    Mamta’s journey from Bollywood stardom to becoming a mahamandaleshwar is a testament to her profound life transformation. She believes her new role is guided by divine will. She states, “No one can supersede the will of Mahakaal and Mahakaali.”
