Peshawar’s Arbab Niaz Stadium Renaming Sparks Controversy

The decision to rename Peshawar’s Arbab Niaz Stadium to “Imran Khan Cricket Stadium” has sparked considerable controversy. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur approved the renaming. However, Arbab Shehzad argues that the Peshawar Municipal Committee officially passed a resolution to name the stadium in honor of his father.

A major controversy has erupted over the renaming of Peshawar’s historic Arbab Niaz Stadium. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has approved changing the stadium’s name to “Imran Khan Cricket Stadium.” The cabinet is expected to approve the final decision today (Friday).

The move has drawn criticism, particularly from Arbab Shehzad, son of the late Arbab Niaz, who originally had the stadium named after him. Shehzad, who previously served as Chief Secretary of KP and an adviser to Imran Khan, strongly opposed the renaming. He argued that the Peshawar Municipal Committee passed a resolution naming the stadium in honor of his father and insisted it should not be changed.

Shehzad also questioned whether the government had sought Imran Khan’s approval. He pointed out that in 2013, under Khan’s leadership, the provincial cabinet had passed a resolution barring the naming of roads or buildings after living individuals. He insisted that this principle should still be upheld.

Adding to the controversy, reports indicate that PSL franchises have refused to play in Peshawar this season. This move prevents any HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches from being held there. However, officials have not yet confirmed this decision.

The KP government has made substantial investments in the stadium’s development. Initially approved in 2018 with a budget of Rs1.37 billion, costs have since risen to Rs2.31 billion as of September 2024. The project aims to modernize the stadium and elevate Peshawar’s status as a key cricketing venue.

Who Was Arbab Khan?

Arbab Niaz Muhammad Khan, a prominent figure from Peshawar’s influential Arbab family, had a notable political and military career. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Pakistan Army, later becoming the Federal Minister for Sports, Culture, and Tourism in General Zia-ul-Haq’s cabinet. He also held office as the Mayor of Peshawar.

The renaming debate continues to divide opinions in KP. Supporters view it as a tribute to former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s contributions to cricket. Meanwhile, critics argue it disregards historical significance. The final decision now rests with the provincial cabinet.
