Historic Open Iftar Held at Windsor Castle for the First Time

For the first time in its 1,000-year history, Windsor Castle State Apartments hosted an open Iftar during Ramadan. The Ramadan Tent Project (RTP), in collaboration with the Royal Collection Trust, organized the event. Last year, they hosted Iftar in the learning center, and this year, they held it in the state apartments.

In a historic moment, Windsor Castle hosted its first-ever open Iftar in its 1,000-year history. Over 350 guests gathered at St George’s Hall to break their fast, marking a significant milestone in fostering community and inclusivity during Ramadan.

The event was organized by the Ramadan Tent Project in collaboration with the Royal Collection Trust. They transformed the grand hall—typically reserved for state banquets—into a welcoming space for people of all backgrounds. The call to prayer echoed through the hall before attendees broke their fast with dates and water, followed by a communal meal.

Omar Salha, Founder and CEO of the Ramadan Tent Project, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate Ramadan in such a historic setting. “Breaking our fast at Windsor Castle is a surreal and powerful moment. It highlights Britain’s rich cultural diversity and the spirit of inclusion,” he said.

in addition, Simon Maples, Visitor Operations Director at Windsor Castle, emphasized the significance of the event. “This gathering supports the Royal Collection Trust’s mission to ensure that the Palaces and the Royal Collection are enjoyed by everyone. His Majesty the King has long championed religious diversity and interfaith dialogue.”

Wholesome Experience

Attendees described the experience as unforgettable. One guest shared, “It’s incredible to be here, breaking fast in such a historic place. This moment symbolizes unity and progress.” Another participant added, “We never thought we’d be invited to Windsor Castle for Iftar. It’s truly a privilege.”

The Ramadan Tent Project has brought together over a million people across the UK. They also hosted open iftars in iconic venues to promote unity and cultural exchange. This year, Windsor Castle joined the list, showcasing the UK’s commitment to inclusivity and religious harmony.

The event stands as a testament to growing interfaith connections. In addition, almost all attendees welcomed the idea of more royal venues opening their doors for such occasions. Some even extended an invitation to the King to join a future Iftar, reflecting the warm reception the event received.

With Ramadan iftars continuing across the UK, Windsor Castle’s historic gathering marks a step forward in embracing diversity and shared traditions, making this Ramadan a truly memorable one.
