Syrians Mark Revolution Anniversary Openly After 14 Years

For the first time in 14 years, Syrians openly celebrated the anniversary of the 2011 revolution in Damascus. On Saturday, people gathered with roses, sang revolutionary songs, and waved national flags. This historic moment followed the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime last year.

People See Celebration as a Sign of Peace

With heavy security in place, civilians in the capital waved Syrian flags and chanted slogans. Many described this as a symbol of peace after years of war. “People say these roses symbolize peace,” said Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar from Damascus. “For 14 years, helicopters dropped barrel bombs on people. Now, during this time of reconciliation, they are throwing roses instead.”

Protesters Started the Revolution in 2011

On March 15, 2011, protesters in Deraa, Damascus, and Aleppo demanded democratic reforms and the release of political prisoners. The unrest began after authorities arrested and allegedly tortured teenage boys in Deraa for writing anti-Assad graffiti.

The government launched a violent crackdown, which led to a civil war. In July 2011, military defectors formed the Free Syrian Army (FSA) to fight against Assad’s rule. Over the years, the conflict escalated, and opposition forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), launched a swift offensive that ultimately toppled the regime.

New Government Faces Major Challenges

Syria’s interim government, led by HTS chief and interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, now struggles with sectarian violence, Israeli airstrikes, territorial disputes, and a worsening economic crisis. The government has planned elections over the next five years as part of a transition plan.

Explosion in Latakia Kills Five

Despite the celebrations, tragedy struck in Latakia, a coastal city, where an explosion killed at least five people and injured 12 others. Syria’s state news agency, SANA, reported the incident, while the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that an accident caused the blast. Authorities believe someone triggered the explosion while trying to dismantle unexploded ordnance inside a building.
