Netflix’s ‘Adolescence’ Becomes the UK’s Most-Watched Show

Netflix’s “Adolescence” has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the UK’s most-watched streaming show ever. Data from ratings provider Barb confirms the drama’s record-breaking viewership, surpassing traditional broadcast programs. Moreover, the series has sparked national conversation and has gained critical acclaim.

Netflix’s latest drama, Adolescence, has made history by becoming the first streaming show to top the UK’s weekly TV ratings. The show surpassed traditional broadcasters like BBC’s The Apprentice and Death in Paradise, marking a major shift in viewing trends.

According to ratings agency Barb, the first episode of Adolescence was watched by 6.45 million people in its first week. This figure set a new record for the most-watched streaming series in a single week, beating Fool Me Once, which had 6.3 million viewers in early 2024.

The second episode also performed well, attracting 5.94 million viewers. Meanwhile, The Apprentice and Death in Paradise each had around 5.8 million viewers, placing them behind Adolescence in the weekly rankings. Lastly, the third episode drew 5.14 million, and the fourth and final episode was watched by 4.65 million.

A Show That Sparked Debate

Since its release on March 13, Adolescence has become one of the most discussed shows of the year. The series tells the gripping story of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested for the murder of his female classmate. Each episode is filmed in a single take, adding to the intensity and realism of the storytelling.

The performances of newcomer Owen Cooper, who plays Jamie, and Stephen Graham, who portrays his father, have been widely praised. Critics and audiences have lauded the show’s hard-hitting themes, including its commentary on social media’s influence on young minds.

Other shows, like ITV’s Mr Bates vs the Post Office, have also demonstrated how TV dramas can shape public conversation. That series reached 10 million viewers in its first week, setting a high bar for audience engagement.
