Samsung Electronics has announced the passing of its co-CEO Han Jong-Hee, who died of cardiac arrest on Tuesday at the age of 63. Han, a key figure in the company’s television business, played a major role in establishing Samsung as a leader in the global market.

Han joined Samsung in 1988 and dedicated nearly four decades to advancing its technology. He was instrumental in launching the company’s high-end LED TVs, which contributed to Samsung’s dominance in the television industry. His efforts helped secure the company’s reputation as an innovator in consumer electronics.

In 2022, Han was appointed vice chairman and co-CEO, overseeing Samsung’s consumer electronics and mobile devices division. His leadership extended to critical areas of the business, including home appliances and smart technology. His contributions were widely recognized, as he led major product unveilings and global launches.

Han’s passing comes at a challenging time for Samsung. The company has been facing competition in the semiconductor industry, particularly in the production of memory chips used in next-generation computing. Market analysts have pointed out that rival companies, including SK hynix, have gained ground in this sector.

At a recent shareholder meeting, Han acknowledged the need for fresh strategies to strengthen Samsung’s position. He expressed commitment to new technological advancements in robotics, medical technology, and semiconductor development. Despite the company’s recent struggles, he remained focused on maintaining Samsung’s competitive edge.

Following Han’s passing, Samsung has yet to announce a successor. His absence raises questions about the future direction of the company’s consumer electronics division, given his deep involvement in its growth and success.

Samsung has expressed condolences to Han’s family, recognizing his dedication and contributions. Industry experts believe his impact will continue to shape the company’s strategies in the years ahead.

Han Jong-Hee is survived by his wife and three children.
