Today World Is Celebrating ‘Youth Day 2023’

According to United Nations (UN), today is World Youth Day. This day holds special significance for Pakistan, given that the overwhelming majority of our population, around 64 percent, are people under 30.

August 12 is observed as International Youth Day. A significant occasion aimed at addressing global concerns about the younger generation. This day holds particular importance in Pakistan since a substantial 64 percent of our population consists of individuals under 30.

However, despite their numerical prominence, several factions within Pakistan’s youth have been let down by our institutions more than any other. The consistent turmoil in political and economic spheres, an outdated and inadequately funded education system. A societal inclination against freedom of expression and movement has resulted in disillusionment and isolation among many young individuals.

Furthermore, the government has not effectively equipped the youth with the necessary tools for success. Reports indicate that 37 percent of individuals aged 15 to 29 lack education, training, or employment access. Given these discouraging prospects domestically, it is unsurprising that over 750,000 young Pakistanis are estimated to have emigrated this year alone. Additionally, as reported, 67 percent of young people desire to leave the country.

These statistics imply that a substantial portion of Pakistan’s population seems to have lost hope in the nation. This is a grave concern, especially considering that the country is in dire need of its youth. Particularly those who are highly educated and skilled to contribute to its development. Ironically, the most educated youth seem to be the most inclined toward seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Other Affecting Reasons

Apart from the lack of prospects and the prevailing disillusionment. There are indications that the younger generation is increasingly losing a cohesive sense of identity and becoming more reactionary. The image of Pakistan projected by the state through education and media is in stark contrast to the realities faced by the youth. Eroding the credibility of institutions and the elder generation in their eyes.

The widespread use of global social media platforms further exposes young Pakistanis to the lifestyles of more advanced countries. Potentially intensifying feelings of inadequacy and marginalization. This also reshapes how young people perceive themselves in relation to the world, distinguishing them from preceding generations.

What A Government Should Do

For policymakers, this underscores the necessity of expanding opportunities for the youth. And assisting them in establishing a sense of identity and envisioning a version of the country. That resonates more with their aspirations, diverging from the existing narrative.

A feasible starting point to tackle these challenges could involve examining the composition of the parliament, where most lawmakers often fail to represent and comprehend the increasingly youthful populace.

Youth represents the fresh blood of the nation, and if blood leaves the body, the nation dies. So we must take action before its too late.
