The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will reveal its decision about the Toshakhana case today. This verdict is of great interest as it might impact Imran Khan’s political future. A guilty verdict could result in a lifelong ban on his participation in public office.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will announce its verdict in the Toshakhana case today, at 11:00 AM (PST). The case concerns the alleged misuse of state gifts by former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The IHC reserved its verdict on August 28 after hearing arguments from both sides. Khan’s lawyers argued that the Toshakhana rules were not followed in his case and that he should not be held liable for the sale of the gift. However, the prosecution argued that Khan had violated the rules and that he should be punished.
What is this Case?
The Toshakhana case is about accusing former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan of doing something wrong. The case says that Khan kept expensive presents he got from important people in other countries while he was prime minister. Moreover, these presents were supposed to be put in a special place called Toshakhana, where government officials keep their gifts.
The case started in August 2022 and was brought by a group called the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), which was in charge at that time. However, the PDM said Khan broke the Toshakhana rules by keeping the gifts and selling them without permission.
Khan says the claims are not true. He says he followed the rules and sold the gifts to get money for charity. But the PDM has proof that Khan didn’t put the gifts where he was supposed to and sold them for his own benefit.
Right now, the Islamabad High Court is looking into this case. They will soon decide what happens. If Khan is proven guilty, he might have to go to jail for up to three years and pay money as a punishment. Moreover, he might also be told he can never hold a government job again.
The Toshakhana case is a big deal in Pakistan’s politics. In addition, it has hurt Khan’s reputation and could really change what he does in politics.
