History Of These Sculptures

In Bamiyan, there were two really, really big statues of the Buddha made from rock. One was super tall, like a 17-story building, and the other was also really big, like a 10-story building. These statues were carved right into the mountain, and they used to look very nice with plaster and paint. They even had gold and precious jewels on them when a famous traveler named Xuanzang saw them.
Later, while searching for another huge Buddha that Xuanzang talked about, they found one more Buddha nearby. This one was made around 1,700 years ago, and it was damaged, but it showed the Buddha lying down and was about as long as a 6-story building.
In addition to these statues, there were many ancient caves in the cliffs near the town, which made Bamiyan a very important place for archaeology in Afghanistan.
