Pakistan chaired the 10th Commonwealth Youth Ministers’ Meeting (CWYMM) in London from 12-15 September 2023. This was the first time in 30 years that Pakistan chaired a Commonwealth event. The successful hosting of the CWYMM was a significant achievement for Pakistan.
Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani chaired an important meeting focused on youth from various Commonwealth countries. This was a significant event for Pakistan, marking the first time in 30 years they led such a meeting.
The theme of the meeting was “Aim Higher, Delivering More for Young People in the Commonwealth.” Youth Ministers from more than 45 Commonwealth states participated in the meeting, which discussed a wide range of issues affecting young people, including education, employment, entrepreneurship, and civic participation.
Discussions centered on the vital role young people play in improving the world and the necessity of providing them with ample opportunities for success. Minister Jilani highlighted Pakistan’s substantial initiative, the “Prime Minister’s Youth Programme,” aligning with the Commonwealth’s goals in youth development encompassing engagement, education, employment, and environmental care. Pakistan has committed a substantial budget of PKR 80 billion for youth projects this year.
On the sidelines, Minister Jilani held meetings with key figures from other countries and attended gatherings. He also showcased Pakistan’s rich art and culture, receiving positive feedback.
Pakistan values its relationship with the Commonwealth and aims to continue their close collaboration.

The CWYMM concluded with the adoption of a communiqué that outlined the key commitments made by Commonwealth member states to advance the agenda of young people. The communiqué included commitments to:
- Invest in education and skills development to ensure that young people have the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the workforce.
- Promote youth employment and entrepreneurship by creating enabling environments for young people to start and grow their businesses.
- Support youth civic engagement and participation in decision-making processes.
- Address the root causes of youth violence and conflict.
- Promote gender equality and empower young women and girls.
The successful hosting of the CWYMM was a significant achievement for Pakistan. It demonstrated the country’s commitment to the Commonwealth and its values, as well as its commitment to empowering young people.
