South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, famous for his role in the Oscar-winning film “Parasite,” was discovered dead in Seoul on Wednesday. Authorities suspect suicide, as Lee was found unconscious in a parked car in central Seoul. Earlier that day, his manager had reported his disappearance and the discovery of a presumed suicide note at his home.
The police, upon finding Lee, also noticed a charcoal briquette on the passenger seat, indicating potential carbon monoxide poisoning.
Lee Sun-kyun, 48, had been under investigation since October for alleged drug use, including marijuana. South Korea’s strict drug laws can lead to significant consequences, including up to five years in prison. Despite negative drug test results, Lee faced public scrutiny, impacting his reputation.
In late October, during police questioning, Lee apologized for causing concerns but did not admit to drug use. He argued that he was deceived by a bar employee into unknowingly using drugs and filed a criminal complaint against her for blackmail and fraud.

Lee had enjoyed a successful career spanning over two decades. He was making his mark in television with popular dramas like “Behind the White Tower” and “Coffee Prince“. His filmography included collaborations with acclaimed filmmaker Hong Sang-soo and commercial successes like “All About My Wife“. However, his most significant achievement was his role in “Parasite,” which won numerous awards, including four Oscars in 2020.
Born in 1975, Lee had notable roles in South Korean films like “Helpless” (2012), along with the acclaimed 2018 TV series “My Mister.” He also starred in Apple TV+’s first Korean-language original series, “Dr. Brain,” a six-episode sci-fi thriller released in 2021.
The actor’s untimely death has shocked fans and the entertainment industry, marking the end of a prolific career that left a lasting impact on South Korean cinema and beyond.
Lee Sun-kyun’s wife is award-winning actress Jeon Hye-jin, and the couple has two children.
