Pakistan’s Tourism Scene Skyrockets to $1.3 Billion in 2023

In 2023, Pakistan truly emerged as a shining star in the global tourism scene. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) acknowledged its remarkable performance. They highlight a 92% recovery to pre-pandemic levels and a staggering 115% surge in foreign tourist arrivals.

In the year 2023, Pakistan experienced a significant boost in the foreign tourism scene. It is witnessing a remarkable 2.15x increase, as announced by Caretaker Minister of State for Tourism, Wasi Shah. This surge in tourism contributed to the generation of $1.3 billion in foreign exchange revenue for the country. This impressive comeback is a testament to the country’s efforts in promoting its diverse landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality.

Wasi Shah shared this news in an exclusive interview with a private news channel. He highlighted that Pakistan achieved a remarkable 92% recovery to pre-pandemic tourism levels, according to the ‘World Tourism Barometer’ published by the World Tourism Organisation of the United Nations.

Expressing optimism for the future, the minister stated that he hopes the year 2024 will bring further growth to Pakistan’s tourism sector. It positions the country as a powerhouse in this industry. He emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting tourism and exploring untapped destinations in Sindh and Balochistan. It encompasses various types of tourism such as adventure, religious, nature, weekend, rural, and tribal tourism.

Wasi Shah emphasized the diverse natural beauty of Pakistan, including beaches, cliffs, forests, hills, valleys, and rivers. It presents the country as a unique and attractive destination. He underscored the need to focus on showcasing unspoiled and undiscovered places to attract more tourists.

Positive Start Of 2024

The minister revealed that Pakistan actively participated in global market shows like the World Travel Mart (WTM) to highlight its tourism opportunities. He noted that Pakistan’s pavilion at the World Travel Mart in London attracted a significant number of travel enthusiasts, international travel company representatives, and social media influencers.

Responding to a question, Wasi Shah expressed pride in Pakistan being declared the best tourism destination in the world and mentioned ongoing efforts by the government to simplify procedures. He also encourages private sector involvement and further enhances the tourism experience in the country.

According to the WTO Tourism Barometer, other leading best-performing destinations were Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Turkiye, and Romania. Egypt and Serbia were at the bottom of the destination countries list.
