Bollywood actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut has achieved her electoral ambitions after winning by over 74,000 votes in the Himachal Pradesh Mandi in her high-profile debut election, reported Indian media. According to the Indian reports, Ranaut defeated veteran Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh.
Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut has won her first election, defeating a strong opponent from the Congress party. She won by over 74,000 votes in the Mandi constituency of Himachal Pradesh, according to Indian media.
Ranaut, representing the BJP, received 537,022 votes, while her opponent, Congress candidate Vikramaditya, son of the late Virbhadra Singh, the six-time Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. Singh, got 462,267 votes.
“I am emotional at the moment,” Ranaut said, expressing her gratitude to the people of Mandi for electing her. Calling her a daughter of Mandi, Kangana crusaded for “Hindutva” during her election campaign and talked about “Modi’s magic”.
After her victory, Ranaut, 37, posted a video on social media where she was seen signing official documents. She thanked her supporters and credited her win to their trust in Prime Minister Modi and the BJP. Ranaut’s opponent, Singh, congratulated her and stated that he remains dedicated to the development of the Mandi area.
The Mandi constituency went to the polls on June 1, with a voter turnout of 62%, slightly lower than the previous 73.6% in 2019. Ranaut’s star power and strong campaign led to her victory, as predicted by exit polls. Her opponent, Singh, relied on his family’s political legacy but could not secure the win.
Ranaut’s victory marks a significant change in the Mandi constituency, which has shifted from a Congress stronghold in the past. Ranaut’s energetic campaign and the support of top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Modi, were key to her success.
Fans are eagerly awaiting Kangana’s solo directorial debut, “Emergency.” The film stars Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. The film centers on the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with Kangana portraying the purported role of the late politician.
