As a monsoon safety precaution, the authorities will close Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore for three hours daily from July 10 to September 10. This closure, from 5 AM to 8 AM, will affect both runways to minimize the risk of bird strikes during this period. The CAA has notified airlines, and they are expected to adjust their schedules accordingly.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has decided to close Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore for three hours daily during the monsoon season. This measure is to ensure safety due to the increased risk of bird strikes during rainy weather. Lahore Airport has informed the airlines so they can adjust their schedule without compromising their customer service.
From July 10 until September 10, the airport will close both runways daily from 5:00 am to 8:00 am. This step is to protect passengers and enhance flight safety during the monsoon season.
“The decision to close the runway for three hours has been made to manage the unforeseen circumstances that can arise due to heightened bird activity around the airport during the monsoon season, particularly in the early morning hours,” airport officials said.
“This precautionary measure is implemented to prioritize passenger safety,” a CAA spokesperson stated. “Bird activity is known to rise around the airport during monsoon mornings, and these closures will significantly reduce the chance of bird strikes with aircraft.”
Plan Your Flights Accordingly
The CAA has informed all domestic and international airlines about this closure through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM). Emergency landing facilities will still be available if needed.
The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) reported that bird strikes affected 61 aircraft last year. The national carrier, PIA, also reported significant financial losses due to 39 bird strike incidents at domestic airports in the past six months.
This closure is part of the CAA’s efforts to implement the Wildlife Hazard Management Plan and ensure safer skies for everyone. Travelers during the monsoon season should confirm their flight schedules with their respective airlines in advance to avoid any inconvenience from the temporary closure.
