Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairperson Mohsin Naqvi is expected to take over as the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president later this year, replacing BCCI secretary Jay Shah. The ACC awards the presidency on a rotational basis, and it is currently with the BCCI. Shah got an extension in January 2024 to continue for another year.
Mohsin Naqvi, the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), will likely become the new President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). He will take over after Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), steps down.
The ACC follows a rotation policy, which means the presidency changes hands among different member nations. Jay Shah has been the ACC President for three years and got an extra year in January 2024. Now, it’s Pakistan’s turn, and Naqvi is the chosen candidate.
A meeting will be held later this year to officially confirm Naqvi’s new role. He will serve as ACC President for two years, starting from 2025. During his term, he will oversee important tournaments like:
- The T20 Asia Cup in India (2025)
- The ODI Asia Cup in Bangladesh (2027)
- The ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan (2025)
Challenges Ahead
One major challenge for Naqvi will be managing the participation of India and Pakistan in each other’s hosted events due to ongoing political tensions. For example, while Pakistan played in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. There is still uncertainty about India participating in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
Mohsin Naqvi is set to become the new ACC President, continuing the tradition of rotating leadership among member nations. His leadership will be crucial for upcoming major cricket events and navigating the complex cricketing relationship between India and Pakistan. This will be in addition to Naqvi’s current responsibilities of ensuring that the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, hosted by Pakistan, goes on without a glitch.
We wish Mohsin Naqvi all the best in his new role and hope for a glorious start to our cricket history with him!
