PM Shehbaz Discusses Polio Eradication with Bill Gates at UNGA 2024

During the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 2024) in New York, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Bill Gates, the founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). They focused on the critical issue of polio eradication.

In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Shehbaz thanked Gates for his ongoing support. He recalled Gates’ visit to Pakistan in June and expressed appreciation for the invitation to visit the Gates Foundation in Seattle in December 2024. The Prime Minister praised the Gates Foundation for its efforts in various health initiatives in Pakistan, including polio eradication, maternal and child health, nutrition, and financial inclusion.

PM Shehbaz emphasized Pakistan’s strong commitment to completely eliminate polio from the country. He acknowledged the crucial role of the BMGF in this fight and stressed the need for continued support, particularly in strengthening the healthcare system and improving nutrition for mothers and children.

Bill Gates Underscore Importance of Polio Eradication

Bill Gates underscored the importance of eradicating polio to protect future generations from the disease. He appreciated the Prime Minister’s leadership and the involvement of provincial governments in the polio vaccination program. Gates also provided updates on a health dialogue with Afghanistan and sought support for initiatives to vaccinate children who have missed doses or declined the vaccine.

Additionally, Gates shared insights about the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre’s support for polio and health relief efforts. He discussed the significance of nutrition, particularly for pregnant women, and how providing extra vitamins could benefit their health, in collaboration with UNICEF.

PM Shehbaz also commended the Gates Foundation for its polio campaign in Gaza, recognizing the difficulties faced by children in that region. He called for an immediate ceasefire and a resolution to the conflict in line with UN Resolutions. Lastly, he expressed interest in expanding collaboration with the BMGF in areas such as information technology, STEM education, agriculture, and livestock, highlighting its role as a key partner in Pakistan’s socio-economic development.
