Pakistan cricket star batsman Babar Azam announced his resignation as captain of the national white-ball team. The 29-year-old batter shared the news on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He also expressed his desire to focus more on his playing career and personal life.
“By stepping down, I will gain clarity moving forward and focus more energy on my game and personal growth,” Babar wrote. He also expressed gratitude to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and his fans for their unwavering support.
Babar’s decision to resign from the captaincy comes for the second time in less than a year. He had initially stepped down in November 2023 after Pakistan’s disappointing performance at the ODI World Cup. In March 2024, Babar was reappointed as captain for the T20I and ODI teams. However, the team faced mounting pressure after Pakistan’s lackluster performances, including a shock defeat to the USA during the 2024 T20 World Cup.

While reflecting on his tenure as captain, Babar acknowledged the rewarding experience but cited the significant workload it added to his cricket career. “I want to prioritize my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend quality time with my family,” he emphasized.
Babar’s leadership of the Pakistan team had its high points. The list included victories over top cricketing nations like South Africa and Australia and reaching the semi-final and final of two consecutive T20 World Cups during his first tenure. However, his second stint was marked by inconsistent performances, leading to his decision to step down.
With Babar now focusing solely on his role as a player, the PCB has yet to announce a successor. However, it is being said the he will be replaced by Muhammad Rizwan. He is also a key player of the team with exceptional average run-rate. Pakistan’s next white-ball series against Australia is scheduled for November, leaving a crucial decision ahead for the national cricket board.
