19 Years Since the Devastating Earthquake in Pakistan: Remembering October 8, 2005

Today marks 19 years since the devastating earthquake hit Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on October 8, 2005. The earthquake claimed over 80,000 lives and left many regions in ruins. People across the country are observing this anniversary with respect and a strong commitment to improving disaster preparedness.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.6, struck at 8:52 AM, severely affecting areas like Muzaffarabad, Balakot, Islamabad, and other northern parts of Pakistan. It destroyed entire villages and key infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, roads, and bridges. More than 100,000 people sustained injuries, and countless others lost their homes.

To honor the victims and raise awareness about natural disaster safety, communities across AJK are holding events. Authorities have declared today as a national day of awareness for disaster safety.

People in AJK began the day with special prayers in mosques to remember those who lost their lives. The government declared a gazetted holiday in AJK to mark the day. In Muzaffarabad, the capital of AJK, officials are hosting a major ceremony to pay tribute to the victims and recognize the efforts of those who helped rebuild the quake-affected areas.

Events Held to Spread Awareness

In addition to remembrance ceremonies, organizers are conducting awareness activities like walks, seminars, and discussions to educate people on how to take precautionary measures during future disasters. Participants from various sectors, including social and political workers, journalists, and business leaders, are joining these events.
