The Punjab government has decided to reopen schools in Lahore and Multan tomorrow, November 20. After a period of closure due to the hazardous air quality, students and staff can return to in-person classes. However, the government will enforce certain precautions to ensure everyone’s health and safety.
Imran Hamid Sheikh, the Director General of the Environment Department, issued a notification confirming the reopening of educational institutions. Even though the air quality has improved, the government will continue taking necessary measures to protect the school community from the harmful effects of smog.
Here are the key points to note:
- School Timings: Schools will open no earlier than 8:45 AM.
- Mask Requirement: Students and teachers must wear masks throughout the school day.
- Outdoor Activities Suspended: Schools will suspend all outdoor sports and co-curricular activities.
The Environment Department has urged schools to follow these guidelines closely to reduce the impact of smog.
Earlier this week, the Punjab government reopened schools across the province, except in Lahore and Multan, after the air quality improved in most districts. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized that the government values children’s education but will not compromise their health. She thanked the public for their cooperation in tackling the severe smog that had reached dangerous levels in several regions.
Environmental experts explained that recent rainfall in the upper parts of Punjab helped clear the air, improving the air quality. Additionally, the shift in winds has contributed to reduced pollution. However, the government is still enforcing precautionary measures to ensure the safety of students and staff.

On November 15, Marriyum Aurangzeb announced emergency measures in response to the worsening smog crisis. These measures included shutting down brick kilns and furnace plants in Lahore and Multan, banning heavy traffic, and restricting restaurant hours and construction activities in these cities.
Although smog levels have improved, the government continues to monitor the situation closely. Schools in Lahore and Multan will implement the necessary steps to ensure a safe return for students and staff tomorrow.
