The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially appointed former national captain Azhar Ali as the new Head of Youth Development on Friday. This announcement marks a significant step in the board’s efforts to improve youth cricket in Pakistan. Moreover, Azhar will also continue his role as a member of the Men’s National Selection Committee.
Azhar Ali is a well-known name in Pakistan cricket. He began his career at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2002. He went on to have an impressive career, earning 97 Test caps and 53 One-Day International (ODI) appearances between 2010 and 2022. Azhar served as captain of the national team for nine Test matches and 31 ODIs. Moreover, he was also a key figure in Pakistan’s triumph at the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.
As the Head of Youth Development, Azhar’s main job will be to plan and carry out ways to improve youth cricket in Pakistan. He will focus on strengthening grassroots cricket, improving age-group programs, and making sure there are clear paths for developing young talent. He will work with regional cricket associations to grow these programs and help educate young players through the PCB’s Pathways Programme. Moreover, Azhar will also organize seminars and workshops to teach players important off-field skills that are necessary to succeed professionally.
On his new role, Azhar said he was honored and excited to take on the important job.
“Having risen through the age-group ranks and played extensive club and domestic cricket. I understand the critical role grassroots development plays in shaping future stars. Significant strides have already been made in this area. I look forward to working with my colleagues to elevate our youth development program further. Our goal is to identify promising talent and equip them with the tools to excel at the highest level.”

Previously, PCB declined the resignation of former Test cricketer Mohammad Yousuf. He recently stepped down from his role as a selector for the Pakistan national team. Sources indicate that the board was eager to retain Yousuf’s expertise in shaping Pakistan cricket. They also have discussions underway to integrate him into a more impactful role.
In addition, PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi affirmed this direction during a press conference, stating, “We are not letting Yousuf go anywhere.”
