Authorities will suspend internet and broadband services in major cities, including Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Gujranwala, starting at midnight. They are taking this step to enhance security ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest scheduled for November 24.
For now, mobile phone services will stay operational, but officials will monitor the situation and decide later if these services also need to be suspended.
The Interior Ministry has instructed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to implement the internet suspension. PTA confirmed receiving these orders yesterday and is preparing to enforce them tonight.
The National Counter-Terrorism Authority (NACTA) has issued a terror alert, warning about potential attacks during the PTI protest in Islamabad. NACTA identified threats from the Fitna al-Khawarij group, whose members allegedly crossed the Pak-Afghan border and entered Pakistan’s major cities.
NACTA has urged law enforcement to stay vigilant, as the group plans to target public gatherings and rallies. Islamabad’s administration has ramped up security to maintain peace during the protest.
Officials have sealed sensitive areas, including the Red Zone and D-Chowk, using over 2,200 containers to block key entry and exit points. They have also restricted movement on major routes across the city.
Over 19,000 officers from the Punjab Police, supported by Rangers and Frontier Corps (FC), have taken up positions in Islamabad. Reinforcements from Sindh and Azad Kashmir have arrived to strengthen these security measures.
Rangers, equipped with tear gas and anti-riot gear, are stationed at critical locations like Tarnol and Sangjani. Authorities are focusing on protecting public safety and ensuring that the protest remains peaceful.
The Islamabad police have reminded residents that Section 144 is in effect, which bans unlawful gatherings. They have warned citizens to follow the law and avoid joining illegal activities.
